Lamborghini announced yesterday that Stefano Domenicali will become the new president and CEO of the company, effective March 15, 2016. He started his professional carreer in finance at rival car company Ferrari. He later took positions at Scuderia Ferrari, starting 1993, and headed Direzioni Sportiva F1 (2004-2007). Then as Team Principal of Scuderia Ferrari 1, his team won the 2008 Constructors’ World Championship. From 2009 to 2014, Domenicali represented Ferrari in the F.I.A World Motor Sport Council. Currently he is president of the F.I.A. Single Seater Commission and he joined AUDI AG as Vice President New Business Initiatives in November 2014.

With Domenicali having such broad experience in motorsports, it seems that Lamborghini wants to change direction a bit and get more involved in motor racing, hopefully launching a bunch of radical race-inspired limited edition cars. Currently their initiatives include Blancpain Super Trofeo (single-make series) and involvement in the GT3 championship.

Here is what Domenicali had to say upon the news: “I am very excited to be taking on the challenges of this great legacy. It is now my duty to continue the successes that my predecessor Stephan Winkelmann achieved for Automobili Lamborghini.”

It won’t be all easy for Stefano, because he has high expectations to meet. His predecessor, Stephan Winkelmann, undoubtedly leaves a big mark in Lamborghini’s history as one of the most successful leaders. Winkelmann doubled Lamborghini’s revenue and tripled the turnover during his tenure, while also expanding the dealer network threefold to 135 dealers in 50 countries. During his leadership the company’s factory at Sant’Agata Bolognese was certified as C02-neutral thanks to efforts in sustainable development and putting ecology in mind. Lamborghini also received numerous awards such as the praised Top Employer Italia 2016 certification.

What’s next for Winkelmann? He becomes the CEO of sports Audi affiliate quattro GmbH.
